You've finished your masterpiece, found a place to put
it and now it's time to show it off to the world! So how
do we accomplish this? The process of getting your finished
web page onto the internet is called File Transfer Protocol,
or FTP for short. There are many ways to use FTP and we'll
cover them here.
File Managers
If you have acquired web space from one of the free web hosts, they
most likely provide FTP tools that make it very simple for you to transfer
your files to their servers. This usually involves logging in to your
account and using a File Manager. The file manager will allow you to
browse your hard drive and pick the files you want to transfer, then
will upload them for you. Every free host has slightly different file
managers and trying to cover them here isn't feasible. Rest assured,
if you choose to FTP your site this way, it will be pretty easy and
self-explanatory.
From Within PhotoImpact
You can transfer your files from right inside PhotoImpact if you have
Microsoft's Web Publishing Wizard on your system. If it's not installed,
you should be able to install the wizard from the Windows Set Up tab
located in Add/Remove Programs from the control panel. Note that Windows
XP does not include the Web Publishing Wizard.
To transfer your pages from PI, go to File > Export >Post
to Web. If you have the Web Publishing Wizard installed, you
can follow the steps from there. If the wizard is not installed, you
will get a message telling you so.
FTP Programs
There are several programs available that allow you to transfer your
files. Most come with easy to follow instructions for first time users.
Check here for a
short list of good FTP programs.
Most FTP programs work the same way and we'll use Coffee Cup Direct
FTP for our examples. You can get a trial version here.
